Commenting on the design, Marilyn told Modern Screen, “I’ve always admired [Oleg Cassini’s] taste and imagination in women’s clothes, and my gown is no exception. It fits snugly down to my knees and then flares out, in the Lillian Russell tradition.” With a straight face she added, “It plunges somewhat in the front, but not extremely.” One fan magazine declared the gown “the most risque design of the year.”
  The dress was originally created  for and worn by Gene Tierney in Where the Sidewalk Ends. On Tierney, the basket-weave sweetheart neckline was held up with a right-side shoulder strap consisting of several rope-like pieces that echoed the basket weave. When Tierney was offered the gown to keep, she declined, saying that it was so tight she couldn’t walk six feet in it.   Marilyn bought the gown at Cassini’s private salon and chose to wear it with the shoulder strap tucked away.-Marilyn in Fashion
